Do Good Project Week 5 : Content Planning

Content Planning

Environment Setting

Ocean

The deep ocean is ruled by darkness. Sunlight does not penetrate much beyond 60 meters (about 200 feet) below the ocean’s surface. The hidden depths of the ocean represent unknown, unexplored thoughts, emotions, feelings, that are not visible on the surface. Thus, it reflects the deepest inner of ourselves and our unknowing parts in mind.

The installation will take place in an ocean environment with the ambiance of the wave. When the user steps into a dark room with ocean elements, it represents the user is stepping into his/her world of the inner self and going to explore his/her mindset.

Jellyfish

Keywords: Acceptance, Flow, Survival

Jellyfish is a Spirit Animal tied to Water, which represents our emotions. In our lives, we will face challenges that makes us to spiral around a negative mindset. We can learn from jellyfish and go with the flow of life rather than trying to always resist it. By accepting the negative mindset as part of the flow of life, you'll expend less energy fighting against life's currents, be less worried and anxious, and project a much calmer aura. If the jellyfish appears in your life, it means that you should believe more in yourself. Jellyfish may be very transparent but she shows the heart’s truth, if you will follow it. This includes the pain and growth that may arise in your life. The inner light of jellyfish allow people to shine from the inside out letting those around you to see who you are. It takes time to discover why so that you can feel better about yourself and see the light within yourself.

Medium

Lights, Colors, Audio

I study color psychology because different colors have different mental and emotional effects and it could impact people in all facets of life including cognition and behavior. Thus, understanding colors helps me to decide what colors to pick on based on the chosen mindset.

Scripting 1

  • Welcome to the world of your inner thoughts. I’m Melda.
  • What is your name?
  • How are you feeling today? Pick a color that describes your feelings today.
  • I hope I will light up your world. Let’s discover your inner thoughts.
  • How often do you think positively? (1-5)
  • What kind of positive mindset do you have?
  • Alright. How often do you think negatively?  (1-5)
  • What kind of negative mindset do you have?
  • Do you see your negative mindset as a beautiful inner part of you?
  • I shall present you the beauty of your positive and negative thoughts..
  • It’s great talking to you today. You’re such a wonder!  No matter how challenging your life is, embrace both negativity and positivity as part of the flow of life. And see the beauty of it.  Love yourself, discover the light within you!

Scripting 2

  • Hello there! Welcome to the world of your inner thoughts. I’m Melda.
  • What is your name?
  • How are you feeling today? (higher intonation, the color more on positive colors)
  • I hope I will light up your world. Let’s discover your inner thoughts.
  • Do you think you are a positive person?
  • Ok got it! On a scale of 1-5, rate yourself on your positivity.
  • Now, I want you to think and say 3 things that you are grateful for 1, 2, 3
  • That’s wonderful!  Let’s venture into your negative thoughts. On a scale of 1-5, rate yourself on your negativity?
  • What makes you have negative thoughts?
  • Do you see your negative mindset as a beautiful inner part of you?
  • Now press the button in front of you and I shall present you the beauty of your positive and negative thoughts.
  • It’s great talking to you today. You’re such a wonder!  No matter how challenging your life is, embrace your both negativity and positivity as part of the flow of life. And see the beauty of it.  Love yourself, discover the light within you!

Storyboard 1

In storyboard 1, I realize the logic behind the experience is not logic as users have to look, listen, speak and touch at the same time. There are too many tasks for the user to do which would make the user feel irritating. Thus, I've created another storyboard that only focuses on visualizing and listening.

Storyboard 2
In storyboard 2, the experience will be focusing only on visualizing and listening. When there is no interaction in the dark room, the jellyfish will appear to be white and semi-transparent hanging in the middle of the room. Visuals of oceans will be projected from projection mapping on the wall for users to immerse themselves in the ocean settings. Besides, the ambiance of the wave will be played during the interaction.

There will be a booth to allocate microphones and headsets. Besides, there are buttons for the user to press for the final interaction. Users will have to place the microphone on their heads and answer the questions based on the narration. When the user speaks, it will detect through the microphone and trigger colors of led lights to light up for a few seconds and remain transparent again.

When the user is talking about a positive topic, it will trigger positive colors such as red, orange, yellow, and green. When the user is talking about negative topic, it will trigger colors such as blue and purple colors. During the last interaction, users will have to press on the button in order to trigger the final outcome of their positivity and negativity and visualize the beauty of it through lights. The whole jellyfish comprises different colors which represent it's carrying both negative and positive thoughts of the user to survive in this challenging environment. Users will be able to see the beauty of both mindsets through the visual of jellyfish in the darkroom.

Case Studies

Murmur: from sound to light by talking to the walls

Murmur is an architectural prosthesis made with Raspberry Pi and Openframeworks that allows passers-by to communicate with the wall on which it is mounted by imitating the flow of sound waves, creating a bright bridge between the physical and virtual worlds. It uses LED strip to transfer sound effects to the wall. The installation emphasizes movement, resulting in an unusual interplay between the public and the wall. It reflects the murmur device's primary approach of converting sound waves into light waves. I was inspired by the combination of the audio and light that could bring something mundane to alive. The conversion of  sound to light has inspired me to think further more on my project.

Mindforest

Mindforest encourages the audiences to take things slowly and relax, implying that when we are calm and tranquil, our world will be illuminated with hope and happiness, as a peaceful mind will cause the installation to transform the dark forest into a beautiful colorful LED forest. This installation uses the technology of EEG and Arduino. Based on my understanding, the brainwave will trigger the Arduino to perform different colors on the programmable LED strips. If the user is in a peaceful mental state, it will trigger a more soothing and relaxing color. This installation has inspired me to convey our inner emotions or thoughts through colors and visualize the beauty of it.

Projek Limina

Projek limina is a new public art series at KongsiKL that reads your heart rate in real-time and visualises it through sound and light. The project is a continuous exploration of the human body as a storytelling instrument, using artefacts and technologies to connect our personal experiences with our immediate surroundings. An isolation booth lets you watch a five-minute video. The heart rate data (input) is then collected, translated, and visualised via the sculpture's soundscapes and visuals. This project is similar to my proposal as it lets the audience to visualize their inner self through their heartbeat.

LEV: A behavioral intervention technology that supports young adults’ emotion management

LEV is a behavioral intervention tool that supports the well-being of young adults by assisting them in better managing their emotions (both positive and negative). LEV is based on the emotion-regulating method of reappraisal, which entails adjusting one's perspective on the circumstance or one's ability to handle it. Besides, LEV strives to assist users in critically and constructively reflecting on their daily lives. Users can enhance their reappraisal ability and become more emotionally adaptive in a variety of good and negative situations with time and repetition of the interaction. This technology has inspired me to create an interactive build that could respond and interact with humans.

Technical Tryout

In this week, I've started to work on Arduino that uses C++ script in order to get an idea of how it works. I seek help from lecturers and friends that have knowledge of Arduino since I'm working on the light installation. Besides, I also did my first soldering on the Arduino board.

My first tryout on Arduino uses LED light bulbs, bread circuit, wires, and buttons. Since it's my first time learning, I try to play around with something easy to have a better understanding of the logic behind the code.

Later on, I also try using Ultrasonic to play around with the sensors. From what I understood, ultrasonic works like a sensor to detect the distance between the user and the device. In this case, it will only trigger the LED bulb to light up when my hand hovers near the ultrasonic sensor.

Conclusion

In this week, I have explored the possibilities of conveying my message to the audience. At last, I have settled down in doing a light installation using jellyfish as the key component for the project. Refinement of the idea is still needed as there are still spaces to be improved and technical parts to be confirmed. However, the idea should be finalized by next week in order to keep track of the progress.
