Do Good Project Week 2 : Project Proposal 3
Project Proposal 3 - AR Learning App
Throughout the week, I've tried to contact NGOs and psychologists to understand more about scream therapy. However, it's difficult for me to get information related as I don't receive any response from them. After researching more on the case studies, I found it very hard to gather information related from professionals and thus proposing another new idea. At this stage, I have proposed a new learning plan which explores AR technology combining UI/UX skills that I've learned before. Below shows the learning plan that I've amended:
Learning Plan 2 |
Project Background
Ever since the minister of education has enforced the home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) system to mitigate the transmission of viruses, the learning gap and learning loss among primary students have become a major concern in Malaysia. Online learning has caused particularly primary school pupils to experience learning burnout or lack of motivation to learn and read. According to an education expert, the major causes are dwindling motivation, unstable internet connection, and loss of interest in the method of teaching which has also led to a drop in students’ attendance in online classes.
Problem
- The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) voiced out about the rise in education dropouts as remote learning continues. According to the study, six out of 10 pupils from B40 or lower-income flat dwellers around the city lost interest in school due to difficulties faced on home-based learning.
- Meanwhile, parents have acknowledged that online learning may not be effective as some of them are too busy to monitor their children's studies.
- A 2020 study conducted by the UKM Education Faculty led by Associate Prof Dr. Azlin Norhaini Mansor showed that 70 to 80 percent of teachers said among the major challenges were garnering the students’ attention. The findings also revealed that student attendance did not attain 80 percent and many were not able to focus on the lessons as their home environment was not conducive to learning.
- Nas Norziela Nasbah, who works in the private sector, was concerned about whether her child was absorbing the lessons. “Online classes are too brief and the activities are limited, so children get bored quickly and lose their focus. Imagine if they have to go through this process for months,” she said, admitting that she could only join her child in Standard 1 for home-based classes twice a week.
Problem Statement
Online learning has caused particularly primary school pupils to experience learning burnout or lack of motivation to learn and read which leads to learning loss among them
Project Propose
In this digital era, students are moving to a new degree of interaction with technologies, and there is a need to connect students to educational information through the use of appealing technologies such as AR paradigms to educate students. Through this project, we provide a game-based platform that uses AR technology for primary students that will stimulate multiple senses and encourage motivation within your child. This helps to activate different parts of the neurological system (seeing, doing, and hearing), which promotes better comprehension and retention. The AR technology in the app will enable students to adopt the basic learning fundamentals in an effective learning environment. Moreover, the app enhances teaching and learning and at the same time to creates a collaborative task among teacher and student.
Target Audience
Students: Primary pupils who aged between 7 to 12 years old that lack of motivation in online learning
Parents: Parents who are concerned about their child’s learning condition
Teacher: Primary teacher or educators who need an engaging platform to connect with students
Feedback
After consulting with my lecturer, she suggests not to target children because we are unable to control and observe them precisely during an interview. I will face difficulties when conducting alpha and beta tests as kids are easily get distracted. When I explain my thoughts and frustrations to my lecturer, Louise, she suggests me to focus on the topic that I'm more passionate about helping targeted communities. Instead of changing the whole new idea, I have to do more primary research on the problem that I would like to solve.
Learning Thoughts
During this stage, I am quite confused and lost because I'm unclear about the exact goal that I want to achieve. Thus, I did a lot of case studies regarding mental health because I'm more interested in the topic. However, I start to struggle as I'm not too sure about the problem and the targeted audience that I would like to tackle. Besides, there was no response from NGOs and professionals which make me feel the topic is challenging thus I shifted to another new idea. I did more research on local issues and decided on solving the education problem in Malaysia. However, I was less passionate about solving problems that I've proposed in proposal 3. At the end of the day, I still stick back to proposal 1 as I'm more interested in human contexts that share common issues. The next step I'm going to move on is to craft interview questions to understand the needs of people that are stressed. Moreover, I understood that the framing of my problem is lacking and I have to seek insights from interviewees to validate my problem statement. Overall, I start to have a clearer direction on what I'm going to do as the framing that was done previously has constrained my thinking which leads to confusion.
